It’s Coming Back!…The Tank-Top

ac slater tank top

I’m calling it. And the Steel Closet is the first place you’re hearing it. This summer is a season of throwbacks. While the technicolor Wayfarer may be on its last leg, bright colors are still in, and the resurrection of the fanny pack is ushering an early nineties sense of style. AC Slater, we salute you.

But is it stylish? Really? Take a visit to your local board shop, and you’ll see where Volcom, Hurley, and RVCA are slowly putting their money.  It is coming back.

My cousin, Aaron Mendoza, started wearing them recently to keep cool in the hot Southern Californian sun. Besides this practical application, tank-tops accentuate your upper body muscles and your dedication to comfort. Just be sure keep this away from the country club or fine nightlife establishment, unless you have the jewelry [and money] to back it up.

The trick to wearing one, however, is finding the right size.  With this article of 90’s nostalgia, fit is most important.  Too small and it looks like underwear.  Too big and it looks like a dress, or the uniform of a Hollywood douche.  A proper tank fits like a suit–flat on the chest, and the bottom should hit at the waistline.  Wear it with jeans.  Don’t tuck it in.  Blasts from the pasts are supposed to be “blasts,” not time warps.

And remember, in these dire economic times, you don’t need to spend much for a simple piece of casual clothing.  Finding your perfect fit, even at a discount retailer, is more important than where you bought it.
