The Art of Networking

Aaaaaaaaahhh the secret to meeting people. What is the secret to getting all that you want and desire?!?! Haha. Really, there is no secret. Just approach a person and start talking. Of course, it helps to have the basics down: smile, make sure your body language isn’t creepy, and you don’t have your hungry eyes on. The worst thing that can happen is that you get snubbed, and that’s not a worst thing at all. Anyways, for anyone who dreads what life is like after college, I will say that meeting people gets easier. You just gotta look. No, you won’t be exposed to the same volume of people that you experience in college or even high school. But in terms of ease of meeting people, people in the “real world” are just a lot easier to talk to. This might be a stretch but this might apply to the dating world as well. Why is this? I guess once people graduated, they realized they weren’t hot sh*t anymore. Or the labels of “nerd” don’t really apply as much if you’re making cheese and bread. If you think that you’re the only one droning at your job with no social life and no hope of meeting people your age, then you’re not alone (I should add a product advertisement around this general area)! Post-grads are very eager to meet people. Even the socially-awkward and awkward people, in general, have a good chance of shaking hands with new faces. Imagine that.

So what do you wear to a networking event? I’m not sure of the rules but its helps to go for broke. This is what I wore to the Google/Hyphen Magazine networking event. I was just playing with some complimentary colors. There’s also too many patterns to count and the button that I got from Mini Market was a conversation starter. I wondered if the colors were appropriate for summer, but it looks like one of those cross-season looks. And walking in this for miles in the sun was not cool.

In the end, I got to meet some really cool folks and I can’t wait for the next one to meet more people.

That outfit would work as a conversation starter for me! Sigh, if only I actually “went out” or lived in a place where that could happen…
